Original paintings, prints made from them, and clothing screen printed by hand — all made by one artist in Sydney, on Gadigal land.
Every piece passes through the same hands, in small runs. No two come out quite the same.
Väki is a Finnish word. It describes the energy that runs between all things — between people, places, objects. It was the closest word I found for the kind of collective energy I wanted to explore.
It started with the art. A T-shirt is something people read whether they mean to or not. Put a few words on fabric and a stranger on the street becomes a reader, even if just for a second. Pair those words with something painted, something lived — and the moment becomes harder to ignore.
I don’t know if it changes anything. A passing thought. A quiet argument with yourself. I think those small things matter more than people give them credit for.
Everything here is designed and made by one person. Unisex, almost always — except for the rare piece that can only ever be one size, because it can only ever be one thing.
Each piece favours natural fibres and fabric built to hold up. Things are meant to age, not wear out. Refined where it counts. Built to last longer than the trend that made you want it.
The clothes are hand screen printed in Sydney, on Gadigal land — inks, screens, studs, eyelets, and embroidery, all added by hand. Every piece passes through the same hands before finding its own. Sometimes a material finds its way into a piece without explanation. I couldn’t tell you where it came from. I let it stay.
The paintings take longer. Oil, acrylic, spray paint, lace, fabric — whatever the piece is asking for. I sit with the energy of each one for hours as I make it. That’s not a metaphor. It’s the only way I know how to paint. Every piece carries a fragment of a particular state of mind — a perspective I lived inside of, for however long it took to finish.
Sustainable practice, and a quiet refusal of consumerism — made in the hope of moving us, together, toward a more creative way of living.
We want people to see what is made here and choose to take part in the world with presence and perspective. Made by one mind and shared with all: here to show what väki looks like as art, and to inspire it in your own life.
All made by hand and thoughtfully pieced together — to remind you of the väki that made exactly what you are, too.
